Session Start: Sun May 26 13:08:25 2002
[13:54] <Grey> We just trundled down the road after chatting with the resurrected women who told us where to find the giants.
[14:14] <Grey> We follow the river north-east.
[14:22] <Grey> The party spots some troll heads in the distance, fairly well hidden.
[14:29] <Grey> Eight trolls charge us. Before they get to us, we torch five of them.
[14:34] <Lani-Zim> Grey torches them. Zim helps kill one with his "Flame All-ow!" (Flame Arrow)
[14:34] <Lani-Zim> Zim flubs his next spell.
[14:36] <Grey> Grey chops at the troll in front of him.
[14:37] <Grey> Lani flame arrows a troll, torching it.
[14:40] <Grey> Zim gets ripped at, but takes little damage.
[14:41] <Grey> THe trolls seem to have a hard time hurting us. The troll biting Zim spits out what he bites off.
[14:44] <Grey> A critically wounded troll flees the battle. Safranna kicks at it as it flees. [14:47] <Grey> Zim shadow evokes a fire orb at the troll in front of him. The troll takes the full brunt of the damage, and dies.
[14:47] <Grey> All trolls are dead. A couple were still regenerating. But not for long.
[14:50] <Grey> Safranna starts looking for the lair of the trolls.
[14:50] <Grey> Zim gets healed by a negative energy.
[14:51] <Grey> We find the trolls cave. We find a part of a wheel inside. Further within is the rest of a wagon wheel. Even further within is a cart.
[14:54] <Lani-Zim> Ergh, human and animal bones too.
[14:54] <Grey> There are sacks of copper within, in local currency. Tens of thousands of copper.
[14:55] <Lani-Zim> Skeletal remains inside a set of armour in poor condition.
[14:55] <Grey> Grey casts detect magic, and looks around. There is some magic within one of the chests. We find a potion within a coffer within a chest.
[14:56] <Grey> Within another chest are some sacks of silver.
[14:57] <Lani-Zim> Skull of the warrior looks crushed and has teeth marks, like a large mouth bit down on the head.
[14:58] <Grey> There's 4000 silver coins.
[14:58] <Lani-Zim> Zim argues we should seek out who it belonged to. It's a pitiful amount of money for us. A jarl's ransom for this place.
[14:59] <Tessarael> (probably belonged to the people who's skulls are present)
[14:59] <Grey> The potion is faint conjuration magic.
[15:00] * Tessarael hmmms, some 1st to 3rd level conjuration spell
[15:00] * Tessarael thinks . o 0 ( based on my time at the Glantri School of Magic :)
[15:04] <Grey> We take the silver and the potion.
[15:04] <Lani-Zim> Zim sighs
[15:04] <Grey> Zim gets Safranna to conceal the cave entrance.
[15:05] <Lani-Zim> His argument that it belongs to someone else goes unheeded
[15:06] <Grey> We have no idea who it belongs to, and frankly couldn't care less anyway,
[15:07] * Tessarael nods, well the trolls felt it belonged to them :)
[15:07] <Lani-Zim> Zim grumbles about high muckety-mucks ignoring the little people...
[15:07] <Grey> We find the river. The road is on the other side. We stay on this side of the river. Grey is thoroughly paranoid of rivers.
[15:12] <Grey> Zim notices that we're walking over some sort of crafted stone block.
[15:13] <Grey> We clear away the muck, and find some writing in Heldannic on the block.
[15:14] <Grey> Safranna reads it: Blessings of Frey/Freyja upon those who give at this shrine. The stone should be vertical.
[15:18] <Grey> Lani summons an earth elemental to help with returning the shrine to good order.
[15:20] <Grey> Grey summons another elemental to finish the job. The job is mostly finished.
[15:21] <Grey> Grey idly wonders if being immersed inside a water elemental would destroy him.
15:22] <Grey> We fix it up properly. Safranna leaves a bit of money. As do Lani and Grey.
[15:32] <Grey> Later that evening we see a farmstead, the lights flickering within. We appproach, and are invited within. We chat for a bit. We tell the story of what happened at Vesa. Lani tells the story, using her large repertoir of skill. We go "sleep".
[15:46] <Grey> We "wake" up. We are offered breakfast. We make various excuses to avoid food. They look disappointed at how we are uninterested at eating their food.
[15:48] <Grey> Grey: Religious reasons - a day of fasting. He gets cookies for later.
[15:49] <Grey> Lani: Sickly feeling.
[15:49] <Grey> Safranna: Eats it outside.
[15:49] <Grey> Zim: Haas a bit, but saves the rest for later.
[15:49] <Grey> The name of the farmer is Odd, and his wife Ingirid.
[15:52] <Grey> We leave.
[15:52] <Grey> Later this day we arrive at the walled city of Norvick. It also has cobbled streets, guards with real uniforms, and a guy doing paperwork at the front gate.
[15:58] <Grey> Lani notices her leg is looking a little mottled. The Gentle Repose doesn't seem to be perfect, after all.
[15:59] <Grey> We decide to stay on the smaller half of the city (the city is on both sides of the river - crossing the river is not a pleasant prospect for some).
[16:00] <Grey> We find an inn on this side of the river. In the inn an adventurer is trying to sell a map to treasure. He is known as Haldor. He wants 500 gold for the treasure map. He also knows of the traps in this place, and has an amulet to get past various of the traps. The place is a little over 40 miles to the north.
[16:11] <Grey> We get the map for 350 gold. The location is near the village of Lamara. Lamara was created by a southern noble who found some valuable minerals there.
[16:13] <Grey> The nobleman got very rich from the valuable minerals, but his wife died. Heartborken, he left the area, never to return. However, he left his treasure behind intending to come back for it some day. The Baron was a foreigner. The village is still there, but it has fallen on hard times. He left the treasure guarded by various traps and stuff. The final trap is appparently very powerful.
[16:16] <Grey> We should throw the amulet near the final trap, back off for a minute or so, and then head back. The final trap should have been disabled by then. The final trap is in the treasure room. The amulet he gives us is a glass tube, with a fingerbone within it and a wisp of smoke.
[16:20] <Grey> We ask him about the Jotan. He's heard of them, but knows little.
[16:28] <Grey> The amulet is magical, moderately so.
[16:30] <Tessarael> (what sort of magic? necromantic?)
[16:30] <Grey> (transmutation and conjuration)
[16:39] <Grey> Currently Vestland does not have a king: it is a kingdom without a king. It has been withough a king for 30 years. A long time ago there was a coup, unsuccessful, but the king and his family was killed. The lands are now ruled by a council of the most powerful dukes.
[16:41] <Lani-Zim> Zim goes to the College of something to try and dig up some info about the Jotans
[16:41] <Tessarael> College of Norvick - it's the mages school
[16:42] <Lani-Zim> (me rolls 18 on my Gather Info roll!) College of Norrvik. Zim gets directed to a book. Book about giantkind has pictures of Jotans battling the gods at Ragnarok. IT has names!!
[16:45] <Lani-Zim> Ceowulf, Bodvar and Gerloc are some of the names of the titans/jotans in the book
[16:47] <Grey> We look for magic.
[16:47] <Lani-Zim> Zim starts to copy the book; it's the biggest lead the party has had so far and may come in hadny later.
[16:57] <Lani-Zim> Lani buys 5 pearls for identification purposes.
[17:03] <Grey> Lani casts an identify, but only finds the weakest quality: that it will do a hold portal. Lani will cast analyse dweomer tomorrow.
[17:05] <Grey> Lani casts Analyse Dweomer on the bauble. It creates a fog cloud as per obscuring mist. It then casts a specific summoning spell, summoning a specific creature: unsure what. It also does a hold portal.
[17:07] <Tessarael> (my guess: it summons the creator of the amulet to steal the treasure while the door is held and you can't see what is happening because of the fog)
[17:09] <Grey> The summoning is a calling: whoever they are, they are really there.
[17:10] <Grey> We travel north.
[17:14] <Grey> We arrive in Lamara. Lamara is a cold, misty, coastal village. The town is half ruined. Lamara is situated on a large lake. Some fishing boats bob in the river. The houses are on stilts, by and large. The map indicates the place we wish to go to is on an island in the middle of a lake.
[17:20] * Grey says: Bugger.
[17:20] <Tessarael> (combat?)
[17:21] <norse_DM> (?)
[17:21] <Grey> (no: bugger, over lots of water!)
[17:23] <Tessarael> (I take it your usual method to avoid this is teleport?)
[17:27] <Grey> (er, yeah, something like that)
[17:28] <Tessarael> hmmm ... what happens in a subterranean setting when there may be streams of water in the rock above or below you? I suppose you can pass by that, otherwise walking over the ground might be impossible in some places (with subterranean running water)
[17:34] <Grey> We knock on a random door. We are eventually invited in by an old grannny. We can take a boat or the bridge to get to the island in the middle. But the bridge is guarded by a guardian. SOme sort of demon or devil.
[17:36] <Grey> No-one goes to the island. It's dangerous, and no-one comes back.
[17:40] <Grey> SHe tells the story: a foreigner and his minions came here, jazzed the place up, dug, and found some funky stuff. But it made his wife sicken and die. Apparently his minions have funny stuff growing out of their heads.
[17:41] <Grey> Most people bypass the gatekeeper. Apparently Haldor did come here. He came with a group of guys, but only he came back, pretty beaten up. There were five of them. He was some kind of warlock. Hmm.
[17:45] <Grey> There is a fog cloud surrounding the whole island.
[17:48] <Grey> We walk over to the bridge. Below the bridge is a boat. Zim steps onto the bridge. Out of the mist is a small, somewhat demonic looking creature. More air elemntal-ish demon cross. It's dressed in a top-hat and tails. He's very theatrical. And he's a mephit.
[17:55] <Grey> He basicslly says, very dramatically, that if we cross, we will die. Zim starts to walk forward. The Mephit watches. Swirly things then move forward and attack Zim. Many swirly things. Many air elementals.
[18:00] <Grey> Session ends.
