Changes to the 3.5 edition rules - Hirelings and followers
Hirelings and followers
Hirelings are standard persons-for-hire. They are not unusually loyal
(although they may be loyal), generally require a recruiting bonus, require
equipment or tools, and need to be paid.
Followers are people granted from the leadership feat. They still require pay
(and upkeep) equal to standard values, but are unusually loyal.
Hirelings
- Require a 3 month pay advance (which doesn't matter long term, but in
the short may cause cash flow issues)
- Hirelings expect to be compensated for any equipment they bring. Practically
speaking this means you have to pay for it.
Followers
- Followers (of any level) come with equipment, values as per one less than
their level on the NPC gear value chart, then halved. Followers with PC
classes use the table unmodified.
The equipment is of their own choosing, which may cause issues if
you want to be standardised. You can count on them having the basic tools of
the trade (a sword and armour for warriors, (masterwork) tools for experts,
etc).
- Followers don't require a hiring bonus.
- For military purposes, a unit composed of followers counts as one higher
step on the unit experience table (eg: green -> average).
