Roland

Roland (Male Pegataur Paladin)
Valiant fighter, and honourable warrior. Former paramour of Safranna, he attacked her when she revealed herself as a vampire. She fled in fear of her (un?)life. He realised that attacking her was not for the best. His high priest told him to go to her and apologize. Unfortunately, she had left the city by then. Three years later, he finally caught up to her, having chased her around the known world. She almost killed him at the time, but they eventually made up. They are now happily married.

Roland: the present

Roland is a rather stern character. More towards the lawful side than the good. While he is a paladin, he actually receives few priestly abilities, as is typical for pegataur paladins.

Pegataur paladins do not know who their deity is, which creates interesting problems. It is generally believed they were created by a deity (rather than some, non-pegataur belive, by a mad wizard). They refer to their god as "our god".

Due to this, they take their best guess at what they should do to please their deity. Currently there are only 6 known pegataur paladins in Serraine, Roland's home (flying) city.

Roland has no close friends in the party, except for Safranna, his wife. He has a great deal of importance in Serraine amongst the pegataur population as a semi-famous paladin. Should be retire from active adventuring, he would most likely be given a leadership role amongst the pegataur warriors, perhaps even on the Serraine council.

Roland: the past
Roland met Safranna when he protected her from the taunts of a group of pegataur youths. They dated, trying to get past the language barrier. After a while, Safranna told Roland she was a vampire. Feeling like it was his duty to destroy vampires, he attacked her. She fled.

He spoke to his high priest about the matter, he told Roland that destroying a nice girl who happened to be a vampire wasn't nice, and he should apologise to her, and do whatever she wanted as penance. He went to do this, and found she had left the flying city of Serraine by aircraft, headed to another continent. He followed, flying with his own slower wings.

Two years later he caught up to her. She went berserk and attacked him with supernatural strength, attempting to kill him. He spent his last breath apologising to her, and this snapped her out of her frenzy. After some heated words, Roland was told to go and find her a husband.

He left, and found a young centaur male, bringing him back to Safranna. Several arguments later with Roland later, she told the poor centaur to get lost. She explained that she was afraid for her life, and that is why she went berserk. She explained that she has problems sometimes controlling her bloodlust and violent tendancies as a vampire. Roland started to travel with the party. The party contributed blood to Safranna regularly.

Time passes.

During travels in faraway places, Roland and Safranna announced they were to be married. They are married aboard a ship in space, attended by their friends. One of the best sessions I have ever had as a DM.

The present is many years after this.

Roland and Safranna often disagree, but get along due to a quirk present in both their societies. Amongst those societies, there is a fairly equal ranking of different jobs types.

Amongst the pegataurs, they have priests/paladins, warriors (which include mages), and druidical shamans. They have virtually no craftsmen or workers. These roles are handled by other races who don't see the lack of honour these tasks involve (like gnomes). They don't mention this to the gnomes of course, no need to get them upset.

Amongst the centaurs, it is divided into priests, warriors, hunters and gatherers.

Roland sees Safranna as belonging to either the warrior group (due to her skills) or the shaman group (due to her outlook). Either way, her opinion, while different to his own, is worthy of respect and should be listened to. Hence he feels he can disagree with her without rancor, and expects her to disagree with him. Else their society of two could not have a balanced viewpoint. Safranna society operates in a similiar way. Thus, while the pair of them have often very disimiliar views, they remain happy and in balance.
